Satta Sound originally got its start with a weekly radio show on Goddard College’s radio station, WGDR, back in the Summer of 2002. The radio show is still airing today and it still holds its original title, the Manna Sound. It was named after the biblical stories of the Manna, also known as the bread of life and the covenant between God and his chosen people. In the stories told by Rastafari elders and scholars, the Manna was taken out of Isreal and brought to Abyssinia (Ethiopia) by the offspring of King Solomon and Queen Sheba. According to Rastafari around the world, this is how the line of David was spread to H.I.M. Haile Selassie I. The namesake, the Manna, has been given to the Satta Sound’s first Selector and Operator, Matthew DeLorey, as he had originally conceived of the Sound. Matthew has been experimenting as a DJ ever since his days living in Burlington, Vermont and attending UVM. Through classes and parties in the area, he met up with the now International Soundsystem, Itation Sounds, which at the time was comprised of Dread Lion, Heartical Dan, and Selah. Alongside them, Matthew (then known as BeeMan) learned the ins and outs of mixing, riddim matching, dubplates, and really stirring up a crowd. Soon, along came Nickel B from Johnson, Vermont, as well as Selecta Meszenjah from Full Spectrum Sound, to help increase the knowledge and capacity for spiritual growth within the Vermont Rastafari scene. It was these DJs and the blessed network of friends and musicians that gave the Manna the upful lift to where he finds himself today. In 2002, Matthew, (aka the Manna) moved to Plainfield, Vermont to continue his studies in Permaculture and Sustainable Community design. It was then that he heard about the radio station at Goddard College, and the rest is now history. In the Spring of 2005, Satta Sound began making its debut as a reggae soundsystem out and about Central Vermont. We have only recently reached the heights with some big shows in the area. Satta Sounds has livicated itself to enriching the cultural and physical representation of Rastafari and our sacred Rainbow Family Circle here in Vermont with some grassroots productions. Project Lovebomb and all the roots Virgin Islands artists coming here to Vermont have become the primary focus within our small collective. And finally, we have recently branched off to provide more roots productions in the form of dubbed selections and dub plates. We will be using mostly Virgin Islands selections, along with some new JA releases, Hip Hop breaks and beats, as well as some classic Studio One sounds to nice up the Dancehall. Satta Sound is now taking on some local Vermont Singers and Players and will be releasing some tracks in 2007.
