Magic City quartet was formed in 2005 by Michael Chorney and Miriam Bernardo to honor the late June Tyson. June’s were the songs of the Sun Ra Arkestra; the “space ditties” and odd chants that defined the Arkestra. Magic City is a tribute and celebration of her great artistry. Michael arranged the songs in what was to become a signature style – acoustic chamber-folk music that is precise but never too careful; a unique blend of brass and strings, jazz and folk. This band became the sound of Anais Mitchell’s Hadestown folk-opera and has been known as the Hadestown Orchestra, working and touring with Anais Mitchell.
Magic City only convenes a few times each year. The concerts are a celebration of great collective delight. These many, busy, in-demand musicians cross-pollinate in so many endeavors here in Vermont. It is the chemistry of these musicians, these long-time collaborators, that is the magic in Magic City.
Our fundraising goal is $40,000 and we are past our halfway mark to outfit the theatre with new chairs, a new advancedprojector, and a high-velocity fan system.
