Thirty communities across Vermont recently hosted participatory readings of Frederick Douglass's moving Independence Day speech. VHC's Reading Frederick Douglass program began in 2014 with only four venues, and has seen steady growth every year.Peggy Hewes, who helped organize a reading at the Baldwin Memorial Library in Wells River, said, "Everyone was very moved by the simplicity of the program and the power and relevance of the speech.""Some of the readers were obviously choked with emotion as they read," said Tyler Alexander, who helped organize a reading at the Old Stone House Museum in Derby. "We held a discussion after the speech, in which many of the members compared the political turbulence of the 1850s with the political turbulence of our own time."Rick Agran, host of the "Bon Mot" radio show on WGDR at Goddard College, organized a live reading of the speech over the airwaves on July 2. Listen to the station's recording of Douglass's entire speech.https://vermonthumanities.org/programs/public-programs/… ... See MoreSee Less
